Grace Tan is a Writer and Director based in Sydney, Australia. Her work centres around themes of gender, memory, dreams and diaspora identity, exploring complex characters on the fringes with a queer and poetic lens. She is a graduate of UNSW Art & Design and the Australian Film Television and Radio School where she received a Masters of Screen Arts in Directing. Grace first cut her teeth working in documentary for VICE/HBO in London and in the commercial world as a creative designer and researcher. Her work includes co-writing episodic comedy noir web series ‘Appetite’ for SBS Digital Originals which had its World Premiere at Canneseries in 2023 and went on to be AACTA and AWGIE nominated. Her short films have also found success screening both locally and internationally. Her award-winning short ‘Lucky Peach’ had its World Premiere at the 70th Melbourne International Film Festival and went on to receive an ADG nomination and win Best Next Gen Short and Best Editing in an Australian Short. While her previous queer short film ‘Fish Head’ screened in festivals including NewFest New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival and more. Alongside developing a series of projects, Grace further developed feature film ‘Koan’ as part of the Australians In Film 2023 Untapped Development Lab with Neilesh Verma, completed a Television Director’s Attachment with Gregor Jordan (Two Hands) and was selected to take part in the 2023 Playlab Film Lab in Mexico where she was mentored by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Her film from the lab, ‘A Daydream with Fini’ was selected for the MIFF Accelerator Lab in 2024 with her latest short ‘Spiders On My Lashline’ soon to be released in 2025. Currently she is writing and developing episodic and long-form narrative in both documentary and fiction.
